Red Queen

  • Specie: Queen Crepe Myrtle (lagerstroemia speciosa 大花紫薇)
  • Location: May Road

I have already written many times about the wondrous Queen Crepe Myrtle that grows abundantly around Hong Kong. From its fabulously ostentatious purple flowers in the summer to the bright orange and red leaves during the winter months, but this individual on May Road really made an impression.

Not only is it an outstanding example of the specie, but its leaves in the past week were particularly striking.

Standing out against its high rise backdrop, the bright crimson leaves were like graffiti on grey concrete, a masterpiece of nature on display for all to see.

There are plenty of Queen Crepe Myrtles in Hong Kong, but few have such red leaves. But if you keep your eyes open, you never know what you might come across around the next corner.
