These tiny red flowers come from a native Hong Kong tree called Yellow Cow Wood (cratoxylum cochinchinense), which is in bloom currently.
The flowers are pretty but it is the trunk of the specie that is obviously the origin for its English common name. Light tan and often with patches, the specie’s trunk is easily reminiscent of the colour of some cattle.
This particular individual grows on Bowen Road.
