Crawler

  • Specie: Big-leaved Fig
  • Old and Valuable tree: HYD WCH/2
  • Location: Kennedy Road and Stone Nullah Lane

Just on the side of Kennedy Road near Stone Nullah Lane in Wanchai stands this magnificent Big-leaved Fig tree.
Typical of the specie, this member of Hong Kong’s registrar of Old and Valuable trees displays an impressive posture, posing with a macho, muscular bulk flexing under a full, lush crown.

But what impressed me most about this tree are its roots, which form an elaborate pattern of growths that snake along the confines of its environment.

Most distinguished is its ability to crawl along the concrete platform, tracing out the man-made structure with its tentacles.
