A grove of Madagascar Almonds in Quarry Bay

  • Species: Madagascar Almonds
  • Location: Quarry Bay, just beside the entrance of Berkshire House (formerly DCH)

Madagascar Almond trees are perhaps some of the happiest looking trees around. They have straight core trunks balanced be nearly horizontal branches that seemingly form many separate layers rising like a stack of dishes.

Then there are the tiny leaves, which seem to form little exploding stars as they spread outward in miniature circles. The entire effect is like a layered cake make from fluffy snowflakes.

Perhaps that is why this species is often planted as garden decorations in many housing developments. But here in Quarry Bay, this grove is made up with mature trees that have actually fruited. Quite a difference from the decorative versions.
